Musically, “Hometown Vampire” is an attempt to distill Elvis Costello, Phoenix, and a hundred great Athens bands into an angular pop thrill. This is where we started really thinking about “vampires”, here meaning anyone who never wants to grow or change or progress, opting instead to rest in negative stasis. Drew helped me tease out the hometown element, taking the inspiration of Hometown Week on The Bachelor to explore how you can’t always run away from the negative figures in your past.
